For the third time in 2012, the United Nations Security Council held a debate on "Women, Peace and Security". Speaking at the debate the Permanent Representative of Armenia to the UN, Ambassador Nazarian, praised the work conducted by civil society organizations at the national and global levels. He mentioned, however, the information insufficiency on the scale, frequency and impact of the violence against women delays undertaking effective legislative and policy reforms and adequate provision of targeted and effective services to prevent the violence.

Ambassador Nazarian highlighted woman’s political participation, especially in regions and countries affected by conflict. In that context, he expressed hope that the EU effort to launch the second phase of civil society program entitled European Partnership for the Peaceful settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh issue may also prove to be useful for promoting a dynamic dialogue between a broad range of policymakers, media and civil society from all three sides of the conflict.

As recently elected member of La Francophonie, Garen Nazarian stated that Armenia welcomes the Framework cooperation agreement signed between the UN Women and International Organization of La Francophonie, which will further strengthen and reinforce the gender-responsive policies and actions, especially with regard to the fight to end gender-based violence.

In its late October presidential statement, the Security Council underlined the primary role of Governments in enhancing participation of women in prevention and resolution of conflicts in areas affected by armed conflict.
