On December 20, the UN Security Council held its last open debate of the year on “the Post-conflict Peacebuilding”, where the UN Secretary General presented his report, and the representatives of the UN member states, including Armenia’s Ambassador, delivered statements on the subject.

In his remarks, Garen Nazarian, Permanent Representative of Armenia to the United Nations, has particularly pointed out that the delay in the conflict settlement not only undermines the regional cooperation and considerably limits the perspectives of peacebuilding efforts, but also contains serious conflict resumption threats.

He added that the post-conflict period in our region (South Caucasus) offers a window of opportunity to provide a basic security, deliver peace dividends and lay dawn the foundations for sustainable development through peace-making processes, which, first of all, requires a political will and determination.

According to Ambassador Nazarian, frequency with which the Security Council addresses post conflict peacebuilding signifies the importance that the international community attaches to the issue as a preventive tool against recurrence of conflict through the establishment of sustained security and stability, and prerequisites for maintenance of peace and development.

A Presidential Statement was adopted in conclusion of the open debate.
