On Monday, March 11, 2013 Garen Nazarian, Permanent Representative of Armenia to the UN, delivered statement at the general discussion of the 57th session of the Commission on the Status of Women. The priority theme of the current session is “Elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls.”

Praising the role of the Commission as the premier global forum, and a reliable advocate for gender equality and the empowerment of women, Ambassador Nazarian expressed confidence that the annual dialogue launched by the Commission will enable all interested stakeholders to highlight the inter-linkages between many aspects of women’s lives, and how progress, or lack of progress in one area can accelerate, or hinder, progress in another. Sharing Armenia’s national perspectives on the issue, he highlighted the importance of Armenia’s “National Action Plan on Improving the Status of Women and Enhancing Their Role in Society” which clearly defines the principles, priorities, and key targets of the public policy that is pursued in Armenia to address women’s issues. According to Nazarian, over the past two decades, states have undertaken a range of measures to prevent and address violence against women including strengthening legal, policy and institutional frameworks, improving availability of services for victims and engaging multiple stakeholders to prevent violence against women. However, he continued that violence against women persists despite these efforts, and even new forms of violence are emerging.

Ambassador Nazarian has pointed out that Armenia continues working closely with the United Nations and other international institutions and organizations concerned to expand and implement the “Women, Peace and Security” agenda. “We must seize all opportunities at national, regional and global level and give new impetus to the promotion of gender equality and women’s enjoyment of their human rights, and build the strategic partnerships that will help us move forward with this agenda. Armenia expresses its readiness to contribute to an action-oriented outcome of this session,” Garen Nazarian concluded.
