07 June, 2013

A concert dedicated to the 110th birthday anniversary of outstanding Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian was held at Saint Vartan’s Cathedral on June 5 under the auspices of the Permanent Mission of Armenia to the United Nations. A number of U.N. Ambassadors and dignitaries attended the concert to honor the legacy of Aram Khachaturian.

Karine Poghosyan, the virtuoso award-winning pianist, who was described as “extraordinary” and “larger than life” in the evening, presented an inspiring and very powerful selection of works of Khachaturian. The program included pieces from Spartacus and Gayaneh with final piece being Piano Sonata (1961).

Mrs. Vicki Shoghag Hovanessian welcomed the audience and spoke of the brilliant musician who remains an inspirational figure enriching human culture with the timeless beauty of his heritage.

In his remarks Armenia’s UN Ambassador Garen Nazarian thanked the Eastern Diocese of Armenian Church of America and all supporters for putting together the afternoon of cultural delight dedicated to the jubilee birthday anniversary of world-renowned Armenian composer.

Ambassador has mentioned that Khachaturian is recognized by UNESCO as one of the most distinguished contemporary composers and his works are part of the world music’s “golden portfolio”. Garen Nazarian further noted that the music has the power to touch the hearts of many people and constantly remind us of our common responsibilities to work together in partnership to spread the universal message of solidarity and peace in the world.
