Ambassador Nazarian’s Statement at GA First Committee

On October 30, 2013, Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Garen Nazarian delivered a statement at First Committee of the General Assembly on the confidence-building measures in the regional and sub-regional context.

Highlighting the importance of those measures as a key element in creating and maintaining international peace and security, Ambassador Nazarian expressed his country’s deep concerns in relations to the arms race and unprecedented and massive accumulation of offensive weaponry by Azerbaijan which is accompanied with the latter’s endless militaristic and aggressive rhetoric and the border-line provocations.

He further noted that Baku constantly rejects not only the basic principles of the peaceful settlement, but also confidence-building measures proposed by the Co-Chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group on consolidation of ceasefire, withdrawal of the snipers from the line of contact and the establishment of a mechanism for investigation of the ceasefire violations.

Armenia’s Ambassador has concluded that the use of force cannot bring a solution to the problem and that there is no alternative to the peacefully negotiated conflict settlement.
