On November 4, Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Garen Nazarian delivered a statement under the Third Committee agenda item 67: “Elimination of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance”.
Nazarian referred to Armenia’s accomplishments towards its commitments under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination and other relevant international treaties.

The Ambassador has invited participants’ attention to the growing facts of state-sponsored armenophobia in Azerbaijan and the alarm sounded by international community in that connection. He noted that, for example, during televised debate between candidates for the disputed presidential elections recently held in that country, some candidates accused and verbally attacked each other for having family ties with Armenians and having Armenian ancestry.

Garen Nazarian further stated that the Government of Azerbaijan has been instrumentalizing education to incite and encourage widespread manifestations of intolerance and hatred against Armenians who, in the textbooks of Azerbaijani public schools, are described as “Armenian terrorist” and “Armenian fascist”.

Ambassador Nazarian continued that open hatred towards Armenians in Azerbaijan can be compared to the worst examples of racism known from the history of mankind and for that purpose the Azerbaijani leadership uses all possible means and resources.
Garen Nazarian called upon UN Member States to condemn growing manifestations of racism and intolerance in Azerbaijan, adding that these phenomena can lead to horrendous violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
