Commemoration of the 25th year since the earthquake in Spitak in the United States

A number of events commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Spitak earthquake took place in the Eastern region of the United States. At St. Vartan’s Cathedral in New York and in several other churches requiem masses were held. The AGBU’s annual concert at Carnegie Hall, attended by the AGBU president Berge Setrakian, Armenia's Ambassador Garen Nazarian, representatives from the Armenian community and international audiences, was dedicated to the victims of the 1988 tragedy.

Boston’s Holy Trinity Apostolic church hosted a concert with performances of classical and spiritual music by the ‘Yerevan’ choir and orchestra and soloists from the New York Metropolitan Opera under the direction of composer Constantin Petrosyan. Present at the concert were Archbishop Khajag Barsamian and Ambassador Garen Nazarian, who spoke of the regions affected by the earthquake and the extensive recovery efforts, and thanked states and Diasporan organizations for their generosity in the humanitarian and philanthropic efforts which greatly mitigated the effects of the tragedy on the population and their continued support over the last 25 years.
