Security Council open debate on “Strengthening the rule of law”

 On February 19, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Armenia, Ambassador G. Nazarian participated at the Security Council open debate entitled “Strengthening the rule of law in the maintenance of international peace and security”. In his statement the Armenian Ambassador underlined the importance to fight impunity at the national and international levels. He welcomed the fact that Security Council’s continues efforts aimed at prosecution of individuals responsible for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes and further that. Armenia attaches utmost importance to the promotion of justice and the rule of law, as these values are indispensable for the maintenance of international and regional security and the protection of human rights.

In that Ambassador has mentioned that the Armenian side remains extremely alarmed by the fact that since 2004 the heinous crime of the officer of the Azerbaijani army Ramil Safarov, who had slaughtered with an axe an Armenian officer Gurgen Margarian in his sleep, during a NATO sponsored program in Budapest, continues to receive a public praise and being cited as an example of patriotism for the Azerbaijani youth at the official level. Nazarian has expressed his hope that the international community will continue to voice its concerns and react to this atrocious development which have already undermined respect for justice, human rights and human dignity and endangered regional peace and security.

The open debate was presided by H.E. Linas Antanas Linkevičius, Foreign Minister of Lithuania. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, as well as Foreign Ministers of Chili and Latvia were among the participants of the debate.
