Armenia participated at the UN Security Council meeting on “Women, Peace and Security”

On October 29 Permanent Representative of Armenia to the United Nations, Mher Margaryan participated at the United Nations Security Council open debate on “Women, Peace and Security”. The debate was presided by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Naledi Pandor, during which the UN Secretary General António Guterres presented the achievements and challenges in protection of women during conflicts and strengthening their involvement in the security sector and peace processes.

In his statement the Permanent Representative of Armenia stressed that the 20th anniversary of the UN Security Council resolution 1325 creates an opportunity to strengthen collective efforts of the international community in fighting all forms of violence and discrimination against women and girls and ensure full protection of rights of women.

M.Margaryan referred to the adoption by the Government of Armenia of the National Action Plan on implementation of the UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace and Security in February this year, stating that the National Action Plan contains a set of measures to increase engagement of women in the armed Forces, including peacekeeping units, political participation, empowerment of women and protection of women and girls from violence and participation of women in conflict prevention and peacebuilding processes.
He highlighted the need of protection of the rights of women and girls residing in conflict areas and advancing their involvement in conflict prevention and peacebuilding processes. In that context Armenia’s Permanent Representative recalled the “Women for Peace” initiative of the spouse of the Prime Minister of Armenia, as an inclusive platform for women and mothers to raise their voice for peace and reconciliation.

Recalling the upcoming twenty-fifth anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, M. Margaryan stressed that as the Permanent Representative of Armenia to the UN and the Chair of the 64th session of the CSW he will contribute to the efforts to promote more substantial involvement of women in the security sector and peacebuilding activities.
