“Salute to Armenia” concert

On September 10, 2011, “Salute to Armenia” concert celebrated the 20th anniversary of Independence of the Republic of Armenia in Providence, Rhode Island. Approximately 1,000 people were in attendance for this program including the U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Rhode Island Mayors, Municipal authority and the Armenian-American Community representatives. It was attended by the U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Rhode Island Mayors, Municipal authorities and the Armenian-American Community representatives. The concert directed by the US based conductor Konstantin Petrosyan was held under the auspices of the Permanent Mission of Armenia to the United Nations and the Embassy of Armenia to the United States.
 

As a program keynote speaker Mr. Garen Nazarian, the permanent representative of Armenia to the UN, delivered a speech highlighting the role of Diaspora in strengthening the independence of Armenia. Speaking of the foreign policy aspects, Ambassador Nazarian noted that the Armenian Genocide recognition and prevention, the preservation of the regional peace are considered to be the major issues for Armenia requiring multilateral cooperation with its partner countries. Mr. Nazarian added that in the United Nations, Armenia is actively engaged in discussions of issues involving social, economic, sustainable development, as well as fight against terrorism. In this context, Ambassador reminded everyone of the tragedy happened on September 11, 2001 in New York. He concluded that Armenia’s efforts in addressing these issues are praised by the international community.
 

During the concert the Rhode Island Symphonic Orchestra and Armenian Choir of R.I. performed works by Komitas, Aram Khachatryan, Arno Babajanyan, Samuel Ward and other composers.
