UN Security Council open thematic debate on the Promotion and Strengthening of the Rule of Law in the Maintenance of Peace and Security

On January 19, 2012 the UN Security Council held an open thematic debate on the Promotion and Strengthening of the Rule of Law in the Maintenance of Peace and Security.

Ambassador to the UN Garen Nazarian mentioned in his statement that Armenia attaches utmost importance to the promotion of justice and the rule of law, as these values are indispensable for the maintenance of international and regional security and the protection of human rights. He added that the systematic breaches of the rule of law contribute to violations of these basic human rights and fundamental freedoms, including that of peoples’ right to self-determination, which are among the major and immediate causes of regional conflicts. The Ambassador also noted that “increased efforts to fight impunity at the national and international levels are essential. It is commendable that the Council continues to focus on the responsibility of states to end the impunity and thoroughly investigate and prosecute persons responsible for genocides, crime against humanity or other grave violations of humanitarian law to avoid their recurrence and seek justice and peace.”

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and a number of national delegations participated in this debate calling for a new era of respect for the rule of law.
