On April 4, 2013, in New York City, a ceremonial event was held in tribute to Yervant Terzian, Chairman of the Armenian National Science and Education Fund (ANSEF) and distinguished Professor of the Department of Astronomy at Cornell University, who was awarded the medal of “Anania Shirakatsi” through a decree by the President of Armenia.

In his remarks before presenting the award, Garen Nazarian, Permanent Representative of Armenia to the United Nations, underlined the role of the Fund in Armenia’s development projects. He has pointed out that President Sargsyan personally supports programs and projects aimed at the promotion of innovative ideas which could propel Armenia to higher economic, scientific, and educational levels. The Government is committed to working with and fostering collaboration among the academic, scientific and technological communities of Armenia and Diaspora, which will make our nation and our state more mature, more developed, and eventually – stronger and invincible.

Ambassador Nazarian also highlighted that the success of our common goals depends heavily on global cooperation and that Armenia’s scientific community is encouraged to continue its international and regional programs with a view to achieving convergence of positions on many issues of common concern, such as the peaceful uses of outer space. “In this regard the role of the Armenian scientists in diaspora is indispensable. Needless to say that the keys to the development of agriculture, health care, IT, and communication lie in education and innovative science. And I know that many of you present here, like Yervand Terzian, are carriers of most inventive and ground-breaking messages and ideas.” Nazarian has mentioned.

The event was attended by the Primate of Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America, H.E. Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, President of Carnegie Corporation of New York, Vartan Gregorian, Boston University President Emeritus Professor Levon Chobanian, President of Tavitian Foundation Aso Tavitian, Armenian and foreign scientists, as well as members of Armenian-American community.
