98th Anniversary Armenian Genocide Commemoration

25 April, 2013

A number of events commemorating the 98th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide have been taking place in different cities throughout the U.S. East Coast. On April 21, in New York City the Armenian-American Community held a protest echoing its resilience throughout Times Square for Genocide Commemoration.

On April 24, many had gathered at St. James Armenian Church in Watertown, Massachusetts for a requiem service, before heading to St. Stephen’s Armenian Apostolic Church in a procession to lay a wreath, led by the members of the clergy from several churches and the Permanent Representative of Armenia to the United Nations.

Following the sober procession Armenia’s Ambassador Garen Nazarian, as a keynote speaker of the evening, delivered remarks on the commemoration day at the Hovnanian Hall of the Armenian Cultural and Educational Center in Boston. He spoke about Armenia’s active participation in advancing the genocide prevention within the United Nations, touched upon the subject of the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide and praised the efforts of Diaspora organizations towards this process.

Ambassador Nazarian noted that consistent and coordinated actions are required to move forward towards the Armenian Genocide 100th Anniversary Commemoration. Welcoming the youth present at the hall, he highlighted their important role both in the Homeland and within the Diaspora in meeting challenges facing the Armenian people and the statehood.
