From May 10-14, the Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Territorial Administration of the Republic of Armenia, Armen Gevorkian paid a working visit to New York. Mr. Gevorkian participated in the UN General Assembly High-level Meeting on Trafficking in Persons and held meetings with the UN Under-Secretary-General/UNDP Associate Administrator, heads of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the US State Department’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons.

At the meeting with Rebeca Grynspan both sides highly valued the collaboration between the Government of Armenia (GoA) and the various UN Agencies operating in Armenia, praising the 20-year long cooperation with UNDP in particular. A. Gevorkian stressed out that UNDP is a key development partner for Armenia and its programs implemented in Armenia are in line with the vision and policies of the GoA especially in the process of achieving MDGs.

On May 13, taking part in the GA High-level Meeting on the Appraisal of the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons, the RA Deputy Prime Minister delivered a statement presenting the most recent activities and accomplishments by Armenia in the fight against human trafficking. He particularly pointed out that the anti-trafficking activities implemented in Armenia are based on 3P approach - prevention, prosecution, protection and their correlations.

The Deputy Prime Minister had a meeting with the Director of US State Department’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons Ambassador-At-Large Luis CdeBaca. According to Gevorkian, the GoA attaches great importance to combating trafficking and highlights the cooperation in the area on bilateral and multilateral levels. He pointed out that Armenia has implemented legislative reforms, established a viable inter-agency system and developed National Referral mechanism for trafficking victims protection and assistance.

In the meeting with the UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake, the parties discussed the current level of cooperation, as well as issues involving future partnership. With the UNFPA Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehin, Armen Gevorkian discussed the 2011 census conducted in Armenia appreciating the Fund’s valuable assistance to his Government. Both sides highlighted the importance of the creation of databases in the UN member states and touched upon the future cooperation.
