Security Council Open Debate on “Women, Rule of Law and Transitional Justice in Conflict-affected Situations”

On October 18, 2013, the UN Security Council held an on open debate on “Women, rule of law and transitional justice in conflict-affected situations”, attended by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Executive Director of UN-Women, representatives of the UN Member States including the Permanent Representative of Armenia and civil society groups.

In his remarks, Ambassador Nazarian has welcomed the unanimous adoption of the resolution 2122 by the Security Council which calls for higher levels of women’s involvement in peacemaking and peace-building. “As a country hosting tens of thousands refugee women, as a result of aggression and war imposed on Armenia, this debate is of particular importance for us”, noted Garen Nazarian. He further stated that the “costs of conflicts are borne disproportionately by women and girls and therefore, the inclusion of women in all stages of the peace process will guarantee a more lasting and representative settlement”.

Delegations participating in the debate have also addressed the issues relating to the rule of law and transitional justice in situations affected by conflict in the context of women empowerment.
