Panel Discussions on 65th Anniversary of UN Genocide Convention in UN

13 December, 2013

On December 9th and 12th, panel discussions were held in the UN Headquarters dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. The panelists highlighted the importance of the Convention and its significance in preventing and condemning heinous crimes against humanity.

Attending the panel, Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Garen Nazarian emphasized the valuable contribution by Rafael Lemkin in drafting the text of the UN Genocide Convention and defining the term “genocide” and its legal parameters. Reminding the audience that Rafael Lemkin’s use of the Armenian genocide as a case study was pivotal to his life’s work in defining and preventing genocides, Ambassador Nazarian continued that witnessing the Holocaust in subsequent years Lemkin devoted the rest of his life to outlawing the destruction of people.

Ambassador Nazarian added that Armenia continues to take steps towards the prevention and condemnation of heinous crimes against humanity and expressed his country’s unwavering support to the work of the UN Office on Genocide Prevention and Responsibility to Protect.

One of the panel discussions featured screening of Lemkin’s video interview who responding to interviewer’s questions on how he came to be interested in the subject of genocide, he replies: “I became interested in genocide because it happened a number of times. It happened to the Armenians and after the Armenians Hitler took action”.

In their interventions the participants have touched upon genocide prevention, international justice, reconciliation, the future outlook of prevention and protection, the role of civil society and youth in genocide prevention, and made references to the Armenian Genocide and its upcoming centennial commemoration.

The delegates of Member States, UN officials and experts, civil society and media representatives, as well as Lemkin’s family members have been among the participants of the panel discussions.
