27 January, 2014

Armenia has been elected to the Executive Board of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) for the period of 2014-2016.

On January 27 the Executive Board held its first regular session at the UN HQ. As a newly elected member to the Board, the Permanent Representative of Armenia Garen Nazarian extended his full support to the UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS in the implementation of their strategic plans and global programs, and expressed his government’s determination to further successful partnership and productive cooperation with these entities.

Referring to the priorities stipulated in the 2014-2017 mid-term Strategic Plans, Ambassador Nazarian highlighted the importance of sustainable development goals, inclusive and sustainable development pathways, climate and disaster risks, inclusive and effective institutions and women’s empowerment which are crucial in setting up the post-2015 development agenda. He further noted the growing appreciation and stronger emphasis on partnership engagement with national governments, civil society, academic institutions and centres of excellence, the private sector and other agencies of the United Nations in the process of developing the Strategic Plans.

Recognizing the important role of UNDP as the head of the Resident Coordinator System and the United Nations Development Group in the country, Ambassador Nazarian concluded that currently more than 20 joint projects are being conducted in Armenia by UNDP in key areas such as democratic governance, the environment, poverty reduction and natural disaster risk reduction.
