Armenia’s Statement at 47th Session of CPD

15 April, 2014

Last week, 47th Session of the United Nations Commission on Population and Development concluded its work adopting a number of important documents including the outcome resolution entitled “Assessment of the Status of Implementation of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD)”. Deputy Secretary-General, President of General Assembly, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Executive Director of UNFPA, Special Adviser to SG and Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS, Special Envoy on Youth and a large number of representatives of Member States delivered statements addressing major progress and challenges in global population issues since the ICPD - a landmark UN conference of 1994.

Highlighting Armenia’s active involvement in the ICPD beyond 2014 regional review process for countries of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and appreciating UNFPA’s key role in facilitating regional reviews and conducting global survey which paved the way for “the ICPD Beyond 2014 Global Report”, the Armenian Delegation elaborated on its national experience in the implementation status of the ICPD Program of Action. In his statement, Armenia’s delegate presented major legislative and executive initiatives which resulted in significant progress in tackling issues related to social protection and rights of children, youth, elderly people and women, as well as those involving migration, human trafficking and HIV/AIDS.

According to Armenian delegation, despite the progress achieved in the following two decades after the 1994 Cairo Conference, there is still much to be done at national, regional and international levels in the fulfillment of individual rights and capabilities requiring further concentration particularly on sexual and reproductive health rights and combating HIV/AIDS, gender equality, gender-based/domestic violence and gender selective abortion, needs and rights of aging and young people, persons with disabilities and children, disparities between rural and urban settlements. During the session Armenia has expressed is resolute to work with UN Member States and other stakeholders towards effective inclusion of the above-mentioned issues on post-2014 population and development agenda and finding sustainable solutions.
