Membership in the UN Bodies

  • The Economic and Social Council/ECOSOC for the 2019-2021 term. The Permanent Representative of Armenia to the UN Mher Margaryan was a Vice-Presitent of the ECOSOC for 2019-2020.

One of the principal organs of the UN, the ECOSOC is responsible for coordinating the economic, social, environmental and related work of the specialized agencies, funds and programmes, the functional commissions and the regional commissions of the United Nations. The ECOSOC with a membership of 54 countries serves as the central forum for discussing international economic and social issues, and for formulating policy recommendations addressed to Member States and to the United Nations. Armenia presented the 2nd Voluntary National Review Report on UN Sustainable Development Goals during the online High-Level Political Forum held under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council on July 10, 2020.

  • The Human Rights Council/HRC for the 2020-2022 term.

The Human Rights Council was established in 2006 as an inter-governmental subsidiary body of the General Assembly, made up of 47 UN member states. It is responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the world, addressing human rights violations and making recommendations on them. It meets at the UN Office at Geneva.

  • The Commission on the Status of Women/CSW for the term 2019-2023. On 22 March 2019, the Permanent Representative of Armenia Mher Margaryan was elected as the Chair of the 64th and the 65th sessions of the CSW for the 2020-2021 term.

The Commission on the Status of Women is one of the functional commissions of the Economic and Social Council, serving as the primary intergovernmental and global policy-making body dedicated exclusively to the promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment. The Commission consists of 45 Member States elected on the basis of geographical representation. The UN Commission on the Status of Women is the principal intergovernmental policy-making body in the areas of women’s rights, gender equality and empowerment of women. 

  • The Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice/ CCPCJ for the 2021-2023 term.

The Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) was established by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in 1992, upon request of General Assembly. The Commission acts as the principal policymaking body of the United Nations in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. The CCPCJ reviews the UN norms and standards in the field of criminal justice, including their implementation by member states.  The CCPCJ is a governing body of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

  • The Committee for Programme and Coordination/CPC for the 2021-2023 term.

The Committee for Programme and Coordination (CPC) is the main subsidiary organ of the Economic and Social Council and the General Assembly for planning, programming and coordination.

  • Armenia submitted its candidacy, amongst other bodies, for a non-permanent seat of the United Nations Security Council for the 2032-2033 term. The elections will take place in 2031.
