Accession by Armenia of “Convention of Transit Trade of Land-locked States” and “Convention and Statute on Freedom of Transit”

On May 24, Ambassador Garen Nazarian, Permanent Representative of Armenia to the United Nations, deposited with the UN Secretary-General the Instruments of Accession by the Republic of Armenia for “Convention of Transit Trade of Land-locked States” and “Convention and Statute on Freedom of Transit”.

The Conventions recognize the right of each land-locked State of free access to the sea as an essential principle for the expansion of international trade and economic development. In order to encourage the development processes, the "Convention on Transit Trade of Landlocked States" in particular provides provisions which promote, on the basis of reciprocity, free and unrestricted transit, in such a manner that land-locked states have free access to regional and international trade in all circumstances and for every type of goods.

Of the neighboring countries of Armenia only Georgia and Turkey have joined the above-mentioned convention, while Iran is a party only to “Convention and Statute on Freedom of Transit”.
