Mr. President,

Today we commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations and acknowledge this historic milestone as a testament to what diplomacy could achieve in the most challenging times.

80 years ago, in the wake of unimaginable suffering and destruction, the forefathers of the Charter, came together with a conviction “to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war”. The Charter was not merely an international agreement, but a collective promise to future generations to uphold peace, human rights and human dignity and advance international cooperation.

The UN agencies, peacekeeping operations, special political missions and country teams led humanitarian efforts, achieved de-escalation of conflicts, strengthened peace, championed human rights and promoted sustainable development worldwide.

 Mr. President,

Despite the remarkable progress achieved throughout these years, we have to acknowledge that the world has not always lived up to the ideas of the Charter. Eight decades later, we still face a growing volume and severity of the conflicts, violations of international law, military buildup, gross violations of human rights, poverty and inequalities. The deepening mistrust between member states, shrinking democratic space, reliance on use of force and threat of force, weaken the multilateral system and prevent timely and efficient response to the evolving global challenges.

Today’s discussion gains even more relevance in light of the recent developments in our region. Armenia has expressed its concern in regard to the ongoing situation and the risk of destabilization in our immediate neighborhood and beyond. We have appealed for de-escalation of the situation and addressing all issues exclusively through dialogue and peaceful means.

Mr. President,

This commemoration should serve as a call to action for international community to renew its commitment to peace, justice and faith in the dignity and worth of the human being.

Amid the complexities of today’s world, we shall not lose the sight of the Charter’s original wisdom. I would like to reiterate Armenia’s firm commitment to effective multilateralism, in line with the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations.

I thank you.
