On the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity a roundtable entitled “From Ambition to Action: Strengthening Biodiversity Governance and Financing” took place

22 May, 2026

On the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity, the Permanent Mission of Armenia to the United Nations, in partnership with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation New York Office, convened a roundtable entitled “From Ambition to Action: Strengthening Biodiversity Governance and Financing.”

The discussion brought together representatives of Member States, the United Nations system, civil society and other stakeholders to exchange views on strengthening biodiversity governance, mobilizing finance, and advancing implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in the lead-up to CBD COP17 in Yerevan.

Opening the discussion, Permanent Representative of Armenia to the United Nations H.E. Mr. Paruyr Hovhannisyan outlined Armenia’s priorities as incoming President of COP17 under the theme “Taking Action for Nature,” emphasizing the importance of moving from commitments to implementation, including through the first Global Review of collective progress under the Global Biodiversity Framework, stronger biodiversity governance, enhanced resource mobilization, inclusive participation, and greater coherence across biodiversity, climate, land degradation and sustainable development processes. Armenia also highlighted the importance of ensuring broad political engagement in the lead-up to COP17, including through the planned Leaders’ Summit on Biodiversity.

As host of COP17 of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Armenia remains committed to working in an inclusive, transparent and action-oriented manner with all partners to advance practical outcomes for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. The discussion served as an important opportunity to build momentum toward COP17 in Yerevan and reinforce the shared commitment to translating global biodiversity ambition into concrete action.
