Mr. President,

We would like to begin by thanking the presidency of the Russian Federation in the UN Security Council for holding the Open Debate on the highly relevant topic "Looking into the Future". We also express our appreciation to the briefers for their eloquent remarks.

It’s quite symbolic that the debate on the future of the UN is held today, when the international community is marking the United Nations Day, which is a timely opportunity to reflect on and reaffirm our shared commitment to the purposes and principles enshrined in the UN Charter.

The eight decades of the United Nations were marked with remarkable achievements in maintaining peace and security, ending conflicts, dragging millions of people from poverty trap, leading humanitarian relief efforts worldwide, advancing human rights and empowering women. We pay tribute to the unwavering service and sacrifice of the UN peacekeepers who gave their lives for peace and protection of civilians.

Mr. President,

Today our Organization is under severe strain in light of conventional wars, growing violence, military buildup, inequalities, poverty and climate change. The deepening mistrust between member States, protectionism, reliance on military power in dispute resolution, disregard of basic tenets of international law weaken international order. The credibility of multilateral institutions is affected, their ability to deliver on their mandates is reduced.

Against this background the solidarity and shared responsibility of the international community is crucial to revive the United Nations, equip it with adequate human and financial resources to deliver on its mandate.

We support the efforts of the Secretary-General to reform and up-scale the Organization in order to keep pace with a changing world. The UN 80 initiative should result in a stronger and more efficient United Nations, capable to prevent and respond to new and evolving global challenges and ensure a better future for all.

Mr. President,

Armenia is a well-known proponent of peaceful resolution of disputes, upholding human rights and dignity and advancing prevention agenda. We are consistent in our efforts to sustain peace in the region, manifestation of which was the recent initialing of the Peace Agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan in witness of the United States President on 8 August this year. The “Crossroads of Peace” initiative of the Government of Armenia and its integral component “TRIPP” connectivity project will boost trade and people-to-people contacts in the region, thus cementing peace and good neighbourly relations in the Caucasus.

Amid the complex challenges of today’s world, we shall not lose the faith in multilateralism with the United Nations at its core. Alternative to international order is violence and destruction. The 80th anniversary of the Organizations is a wake-up call for the international community to renew its commitment to the UN Charter and its promise “to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war”.

Armenia reiterates its adherence to an efficient multilateral order anchored on the United Nations Charter and international law.

I thank you.
