The United Nations General Assembly 67th session and plenaries of its Main Committees are underway in New York. Today, Ambassador G. Nazarian, Armenia’s Permament Representative to the UN, delivered a statement under the agenda item 67: “Elimination of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance”.

Ambassador Nazarian noted that the wounds of the last war against the civilian population of the Nagorno Karabakh, have not yet convalesced, but neighboring Azerbaijan is trying to launch a new war by initiating an unhealthy arms race and preaching hatred against Armenia on the state level.

The Ambassador has invited participants’ attention to the facts of state-sponsored armenophobia launched by Azerbaijani authorities adding that, in that respect, the alarm has been sounded by international and intergovernmental institutions specializing in combating racism. According to Ambassador Nazarian, Ramil Safarov’s pardoning, which has been the main point of his speech, not only contradicts to the humanitarian purposes of the international law and relevant international instruments, but also challenges the whole system of human rights.

Nazarian has also noted that the pardoning of a murderer is an appalling example of the continuation of impunity, continuation of crime committed on ethnic basis, as a consequence of the xenophobic and racist policies being constantly conducted in Azerbaijan in the past decades. He continued that Azerbaijan deliberately violates the goals of the United Nations of “practice[ing] tolerance and liv[ing] together in peace with one another as good neighbors” and thereby undermines the process of formation of confidence-building in the region.
