Symposium on Genocide Prevention in UN

On April 17, 2014, the Permanent Mission of Armenia to the UN in collaboration with the Armenian and non-Armenian NGOs held a symposium in the Dag Hammarskjöld Library Auditorium of the United Nations held a symposium on genocide prevention.

The event was kicked off with the opening remarks by the Representative of the Permanent Mission of Armenia to the United Nations, who emphasized the international cooperation for the proper recognition and condemnation of genocides and mass atrocities, which can largely contribute to strengthening of the UN prevention mechanisms, and highlighted the importance of education programs including human rights education in the prevention of genocide in the world. In this context, he congratulated the KRIEGER Essay Contest winners (students writing essays on genocidal atrocities around the globe) who have been presented awards at the event. He also expressed gratitude to all those, including Turkish scholars, students and simply citizens of that country, who realize the significance of preventing crimes against humanity and support the process of their full recognition.

Chaired by Dr. Ani Kalayjian, President of the Association for Trauma Outreach and Prevention, the symposium featured Turkish academicians and journalist as panelists who reflected their views on the recent development regarding the discussions on the Armenian Genocide within the Turkish society highlighting the importance of raising public awareness on the issue in Turkey. The speakers also touched upon the consequences of the genocide perpetrated against Armenians including issues related to the wealth and property of victims/survivors and rich heritage of Armenians left in nowadays Turkey.
