Armenia participated at the UN Security Council online briefing dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War

09 May, 2020

On May 8 an online briefing of the United Nations Security Council was held under the Estonian Presidency of the Council, entitled “75 Years from the End of the Second World War on European Soil - Lessons Learned for Preventing Future Atrocities, Responsibility of the Security Council”. Representatives of over 65 countries, including the Permanent Representative of Armenia participated at the meeting over the video-link. The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Mr. Josep Borrell, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Ms. Rosemary DiCarlo, and Professor history at Yale University, Mr. Timothy Snyder were the briefers of the meeting.

In his remarks, Permanent Representative Mher Margaryan reflected on the contribution of the Armenian people to the Victory in WWII. Referring to the importance of learning lessons from the past calamities, the PR of Armenia reminded that “the Armenian people, who went through the horrors of genocide committed under the cover of the WWI, demonstrated selfless courage and enormous sacrifice during the Second World War.”

The Permanent Representative of Armenia mentioned that despite major efforts of the United Nations in promoting peace and security in the past 75 years, the world continues to face armed conflicts, authoritarian trends, as well as hate speech and hate crimes being committed, including in our immediate neighborhood. He emphasized that the violations of human rights, fundamental freedoms and particularly the suppression of the inalienable right of people for self-determination, are the underlying causes of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and that the free expression of the will of the people of Artsakh is the fundamental basic premise of the resolution of the conflict.

In his statement the Permanent Representative of Armenia highlighted the special duty and moral imperative that Armenia carries to consolidate international efforts aimed at prevention of genocide and its commitment to contribute to strengthening the capacities of the UN system in order to prevent future atrocities.
