A side event on gender perspective in climate change, biodiversity and desertification was held at the UN headquarters

On 12 March, the Permanent Mission of Armenia to the United Nations hosted a side event entitled “Empowerment of Women Across the Rio Conventions: Gender Perspective in Addressing Climate Change, Biodiversity Loss and Desertification” in collaboration with the Permanent Missions of Mongolia and Brazil, UNDP, UNFPA and UN Women, on the margins of the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69), with the participation of H.E. Mr. Narek Mkrtchyan, Minister of Labor and Social Affairs of the Republic of Armenia.

In his welcoming remarks, the Permanent Representative of Armenia to the United Nations, Ambassador Mher Margaryan, emphasized the need to empower women and girls across all sectors, including in environmental and climate policies, while underscoring the crucial role of women in the implementation of the Rio Conventions․

Minister Mkrtchyan highlighted the importance of promoting gender equality in all facets of environmental governance․ The Minister reconfirmed Armenia’s full commitment to advancing gender perspectives in the context of biodiversity preservation and in decision-making processes.

The side event proceeded with the discussion, moderated by Ms. Jemimah Njuki, Chief of Economic Empowerment, UN Women. The panelists included Ms. Vanessa Dolce de Faria, Ambassador, High Representative for Gender Issues of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, H.E. Mr. Ankhbayar Nyamdorj, Permanent Representative of Mongolia to the UN, Ms. Ivana Živković, Assistant Administrator and Director for the Regional Bureau for Europe of UNDP, Ms. Anna Gasparyan, Advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia, Mr. Alessio Cangiano, Acting Director of the Programme Division of UNFPA and Ms. Pratima Gurung, President of “NIDWAN” NGO. The meeting was attended by UN Member States, UN entities and large number of representatives of civil society and women’s organizations.
