Remarks by Sofya Simonyan, Deputy Permanent Representative of Armenia to the UN at High-Level Partner’s Meeting “Equality in Law for Women and Girls by 2030: A Multi-stakeholder Strategy for Accelerated Action”

Armenia joins its voice in supporting the Strategy, and we look forward to its launch next month.

L’Arménie a le privilège d’assumer la présidence de l’Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie et je voudrais remercier l’Organisation et ses membres, au nom de la présidence arménienne, pour le soutien résolu à l'action contre les lois discriminatoires qui affectent les femmes et les filles. Il faut souligner que cet engagement se reflète également dans la "Stratégie de la Francophonie pour la promotion de l’égalité entre les femmes et les hommes, des droits et de l’autonomisation des femmes et des filles” adoptée par les chefs d'État et de gouvernement du 17ème Sommet de la Francophonie, qui s’est tenue à Erevan en octobre.

The Strategy is an important element in helping achieve SDG5 and the 2030Agenda for Sustainable Development, in its entirety, and we acknowledge the critical role of the UN Women, the OIF and other key partners in supporting the implementation of the strategy.

In Armenia, the general prohibition of discrimination against women appears to be rather well-anchored in the domestic legal framework, including constitutionally. All violations of human rights based on discrimination of any sort (including those on the basis of sex) are punishable by the Criminal Code of Armenia. According to Armenia’s Labor Code, women and men shall receive equal pay for equal or equivalent work, and discrimination in job application processes is prohibited. That being said, we recognize that the issue of discrimination at workplace and in the matters of employment is a very difficult and persistent issue, so the government of Armenia is working to introduce further provisions to make sure that discrimination in employment is better prevented and addressed.

As a member of the Group of Friends on Gender Parity, #Armenia is fully committed to cooperation for gender equality and empowerment of women, both domestically and internationally. This priority is duly reflected in the pledges we are making for the UN Human Rights Council, to which we have presented our candidacy for the years 2020-2022 at the elections in October this year. Next month, Armenia will be assuming membership in the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW64), which we view as a key global platform for cooperation for gender equality. To conclude, I would like to reaffirm our commitment to work closely with our partners so that together we can make discriminatory practices a thing of the past.
