Mr. President,

I thank you for convening this interactive dialogue with the candidate for the post of the President of the 75th session of the General Assembly. Effective engagement of candidates with the member states has traditionally played an important role in sustaining and reinforcing the values of transparency and inclusivity of the election process.

The challenges caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic have transformed the working modalities at the UN but I think we can all agree that the new context, in which we operate, necessitates even more exchange, coordination and engagement. We have taken note that the candidate has conducted meetings with selected groups and individual UN member states and we also note that so far, there has not been broader engagement with the Group of the Eastern European States.

Mr. President,

I would like to highlight the importance that Armenia attaches to the smooth and effective operations of the General Assembly in carrying out its mandate throughout the upcoming session. The 75th anniversary of the UN is a key milestone to recommit ourselves to cooperation for dialogue, peace and reconciliation. Engaging, effective and non-divisive presidency is expected to be critical in this process. The landmark anniversary of the UN stands also as an important reminder about the crucial role of human rights and human dignity and the need to foster global environment in which all people can exercise their fundamental freedoms, free of coercion or exclusion on any grounds.

Being a landlocked country, whose access to sea by the neighboring transit country is essentially blocked, Armenia is committed to multilateral cooperation aimed at addressing detrimental barriers for development and promote inclusive, human-centered approaches, in line with the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.

We are convinced that strong adherence to all purposes and principles of the UN Charter should guide the multilateral efforts for peace, security and development.

As a consistent supporter and promoter of the concept and practice of prevention, we remain resolute to continue to contribute to the agenda of prevention of genocide, including within the UN General Assembly .

Mr. President,

We will continue to carefully review the vision, the priorities and the professional record of the candidate to the post of PGA for the 75th session, as well as the policies and positions of the nominating country.

We have duly noted the existing procedures and the context, in which the elections will be taking place and will formulate our approach in due course, also, taking into account today’s debate.
